The meditative qualities of this ancient Asian artform are realized by the viewer and artist alike. Lanzaro is one who is not only keeping the treasured technique alive, but also teaching others. Pieces are not about painting photographically, but about the essence of what is seen—the mysteria of everyday images, the detail of one limb of a branch, and not the whole tree, and dancing planes of white to allow the imagination to fill in the blanks. A unique angle of this artist is her reconciliation of east (using sumi-e and rice paper as her medium) and west (choosing familiar scenes and animals as her subjects).
