Bringing Glamour Home

We all could use a little more glamour in our lives. So to help us figure out how to get it without overdoing it, we spoke with Marlaina Teich (ASID), owner of Marlaina Teich Designs. Based in Merrick, and a graduate of The Metropolitan Institue of Interior Design in Syosset, Marlaina definitely has her pulse on what Long Islanders are looking for and where to shop!

LIP: Tell us a bit about your specialties and some of your clients.
I’ve always been interested in how space affects how we feel in our environment. Space planning is so important. Anyone can have great taste and great style, but unless you are educated in how to plan a space properly, you just won’t get very far. In addition to providing our clients with full interior design services, we also specialize in space planning, project management, and selection and specification of finishes and furniture. While a lot of my clients are professionals, I’ve also been working with young families who are moving into or building their first home. They come to us because they want it to be fabulous but don’t know what to do!

LIP: Glamour seems to be a hot trend right now. How are you helping young families incorporate that into their homes, but on a budget?
Everyone loves a touch of glamour at home, it makes us feel special. When I think of glamour, I think of a sitting room or a bedroom, a private space that you can fill with the things you love. Right now, I think some of the easiest ways to achieve this is by bringing in a few accessories such as a lacquered mirror or maybe a modern lamp with a shimmery shade. Anything with a metallic finish or some shine can add that sparkle in an instant and it doesn’t have to be expensive. I say spend your money on that one important piece such as an oversized mirror and then play with it. Use it over your dresser for a few months and then switch it up and bring it into the living room anytime you need a change.

LIP: Any other tricks?
I recently painted one of my ceilings in this beautiful pearlized paint from Benjamin Moore. It is something subtle but when the light hits it just right, you get a little bit of shimmer and it’s such a lovely way to bring a little glamour into a room. Something like this is not a huge commitment and a gallon of the paint costs about $50 or so. To take it to the next step, you can always add a romantic new chandelier, which again, you can find at reasonable price points at retail shops such as Elements in Glen Cove. Just remember to edit yourself! It’s too easy to go overboard.

LIP: Speaking of shops, what are some of your favorite sources on Long Island?
Well in addition to Elements, I am also a fan of shopping at unexpected places such as Lowe’s for things like lighting. You can find great style and good quality at affordable prices. The Potting Shed in Huntington is another favorite spot. They have unusual finds and make the most beautiful silk floral arrangements. While I love fresh flowers, arrangements can become costly. Silk flowers are an inexpensive way to freshen things up. I love mixing them with fresh flowers. I recently purchased a silk sunflower arrangement in a gorgeous vase. I’m having such fun adding in a few fresh blooms and then displaying them in my dining room and my outdoor patio. I love that I can use it indoors and out.
