Davis Murphy exhibits copper and carved wood sculptures in solo Greenport Show
“Mamo Jo and Splinter Fish,” an exhibit of recent work by Davis Murphy will be showing at the Gallery at Greenport Harbor Brewing Company, 234 Carpenter Street in Greenport from October 9 – November 21 with a reception on October 9, 6 – 9pm.
Murphy, a native of Long Island, is an acclaimed multidisciplinary artist whose years of travel and study have created a body of work which is intensely personal and unorthodox. The artist works range from post-apocalyptic creatures to delicate bronze figures to a 90-foot heard of life size thundering copper horses.
Mamo Jo (the ancient Caribbean name for mermaids) and Splinter Fish will showcase Davis Murphy’s extraordinary skills in copper sculpture; his mermaids mystical and enchanted juxtaposed with primitive very textural carved wooden fish – a testimony to his love of the sea and his unique and diverse talent as an artist.
Having sailed since childhood the artist gravitated to the Coconut Grove boatbasin in Miami. Being the art center in the 1970’s the artist’s work in sculpture was soon recognized. He co-founded Artifacts/Wet Paint, an experimental gallery, and contributed to major nightclub art environments and installations during the South Beach art explosion.Andy Warhol’s Interview Magazine hired his
gallery’s stable of artists for a two-week mission; a photographic investigation of the city’s art and nightlife.
He has been commissioned to do artwork for the artist Prince, is in the collections of Limelight Studios, Telemundo Miami, 20th Century Fox Pictures and he was recently commissioned to provide artwork for the hit movie Marley & Me starring Jennifer Aniston.
Greenport Harbor Brewing Company is located on 234 Carpenter Street (behind Chase Bank on Main St. Greenport). Tasting Room and Gallery open Friday-Sunday 12-6pm.
