We’re All Just Passing Through at LI Vinyl Exchange

We can transcend the world at a different speed of light
We can close our eyes so that everything’s alright
If there’s something in the air you can’t defeat
Then look towards me

—From “The World At Your Feet” by We’re All Just Passing Through

Singer/Songwriter Travis Johnides was a founding member/guitarist for the melodic post-hardcore band, The Goodwill. After playing guitar with The Goodwill for five years, which included sharing the bill with bands like Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday and Brand New, the Suffolk County native decided to go another route. He ended up forming the folk-rock duo, We’re All Just Passing Through, a name stemming from a line spoken by Anthony Hopkins’ character in “Hearts in Atlantis.”

The duo consists of the singer/songwriter/guitarist and his sister, Alexa, on vocals. But it’s a family affair with his brother-in-law, Joe Manzione, playing drums on the 3-song EP, “Bedroom Recordings, Vol. 1,” which was mixed by Travis’ good friend, Tyler Francavilla (who also happens to play bass in the video for their first single, linked below). Influenced by songwriters such as Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum), Conor Oberst, Tom Petty and Neil Young, Johnides concentrates on the more melodic aspects of his music this time around—forgoing any aggressive post-hardcore tendencies. But three minutes into the heartbreak song, “Nobody Picks a Fist Fight in New York City,” the drums and bass begin to turn the acoustic folkies into folk-rockers, as witnessed in their music video, filmed at a friend’s house in Centerport: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YodMmjMU7Dw

Also an editor of television commercials and music videos for Long Island bands, Johnides tries to write personal songs that have a universal appeal, and he’s really enjoying making music “purely for fun,” without the pressure of a record label. You can catch WAJPT when the duo perform originals at the “single best venue” Travis has ever played on the island: Long Island Vinyl Exchange in East Northport, which has an atmosphere extremely conducive to listening to music. They will be playing as part of the Rocktober 4 Band Slam at 8:45pm sharp on Thursday, October 14th. Admission is $5, and includes a buffet.
