That’s right. It’s a little fun in the sun for the Pride. The party won’t last long though because Long Island’s favorite college basketball bunch has to face perennial power North Carolina.
The Hofstra men’s basketball team will take on No. 9 North Carolina in the first round of the Honda Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Thursday at 5 p.m. in San Juan, in a game televised nationally by ESPN2.
Hofstra started its season with a 102-62 win over Farmingdale State on Saturday in the debut of head coach Mo Cassara, who took over the Pride reins this season after spending the last four years as an assistant at Boston College, and the two years prior to that as the head coach at Division III Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
North Carolina on Thursday, though, represents the first Division I opponent that Cassara will face as a head coach, as he goes head-to-head against two-time national champion coach Roy Williams.
Hofstra does not have much of a history against any of the teams in the Honda Puerto Rico Tip-Off. It has never faced North Carolina, or either of its possible second-round opponents (Minnesota or Western Kentucky).
