Massage Envy

When I walked into Massage Envy in Rocky Point, I have to admit I had some preconceived notion of what to expect. Franchise club chain = cookie cutter experience, right? Wrong. The decor and ambience is soothing and elegant, customer service is top-notch, and each massage and facial is customized to your personal needs.

The concept began in Arizona in 2003 and there are now well over 600 franchises across the country. A yearlong membership gets you a massage a month for $59, paid up front or a monthly charge to your credit card. With such affordable prices, you do give up extras, like plush robes and changing rooms, but you get skilled therapists, and there are some excellent add-ons to enhance your massage, such as aromatherapy and deep heat relief muscle therapy.

After my massage therapist, Kat, and I discussed my needs and preferences, she left me to ready myself on the comfortable, heated table. She gave me a basic Swedish massage, but combined it with some spot deep tissue work. Kat has a real gift for applying just the right pressure where needed.

For my facial, I didn’t need to get up. Licensed esthetician Sherri came in while I was relaxing on (more like melting into) the warm treatment table. She examined my skin and determined that, of their four basic facials, the best one for my skin was their AHA Rapid Exfoliator Anti-Aging Facial. Sherri used products from their Murad line, which, according to the pamphlet, is based on the conclusion that “our cells lose the ability to retain water as we age. Murad products are designed to repair cell membranes while attracting water and nutrients to the cells.”

While Sherri cleansed and toned my face, she asked me about my regular skincare routine. When I told her I used scrubs to exfoliate, she advised that I avoid them. With my sensitive skin and tendency to rosacea in spots, the grit could damage my skin. Sherri recommended glycolic acid, which was included in the facial, followed by a calming lotion, a facial massage and, finally, moisturizer. Sherri has steady, gentle hands and my skin felt and looked so healthy!

Other member benefits include product discounts, the use of other Massage Envy clinics nationwide, and you can bring guests at a special introductory price. There seems to be a good amount of flexibility—you can “freeze” your membership due to extenuating circumstances, such as illness and if you miss one, it rolls over to the next month.
