Foodie Gossip – March 2011

Boy, there is just no letup in the fantastic offers from LI restaurants. We truly are among the top diverse dining scenes in the entire country, and good news: Great options aren’t just relegated to the main course.

Lunch specials at Fanatico Italian Bistro & Bar in Jericho (516) 932-5080 (served until 4pm) are unique for a local Italian joint and priced right. For $9.95, you can go for various combinations of soup, salad, pasta and pizza, or their Provolone Sliders. For the same price, they also offer a 3 Egg Frittata with an array of meat, veggie and cheese topping choices, along with a cup of soup and fries.

La Plage Restaurant in Wading River (631) 744-9200 is also offering quite a sumptuous feast—handmade Artisanal pasta specials, plus salad for $25 on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Rare is the restaurant that offers pasta prepared and composed in such a way, so jump on this.

Generally, the sublime repasts get all the attention, and for good reason, but what really makes an elegant meal complete is not just the main course, but also the dishes surrounding it. Bel Posto in Huntington (631) 421-4600 is saluting top-quality non-main course fare with their “Wine and Cheese Wednesdays” every week from 5-10pm. Selections of wines by the glass are half-price at the bar accompanied by complimentary cheese pairings. Buy a bottle of wine and get three cheeses and two meats for $12. Cheeses include such classics as Parmigiano Reggiano and Gorgonzola; meat choices include Prosciutto di Parma and Bresaola.

Lastly, a mention should be made of specialty treats created by a new local baking company Wheat Don’t Need You. They specialize in gluten-free cookies, safe to eat by sufferers of Celiac Disease, an intestinal affliction gaining more exposure (and selections) in the LI dining world. Check them out at
