Around Town Water Mill
Located in the Town of Southampton on Long Island’s tony South Fork, the hamlet of Water Mill was listed as Forbes magazine’s eighth most expensive zip code in America. It is 12.5 square miles of farmland, fields and ponds bordering Bridgehampton, Southampton Village and Noyac to the north. Water Mill’s namesake is a historic 350-year-old water-powered grist mill that has been preserved by its citizens. Edward Howell, an English settler out of Lynn, Massachusetts began building the mill in 1640 on land given to him by the Town of Southampton. It began grinding grain in 1644, and it was moved and has changed ownership numerous times in the centuries that followed. Today, the mill is owned and operated by a non-profit group called the Water Mill Museum. It is one of the oldest commercial buildings on Long Island.
Centrally located in the Hamptons, Water Mill is within five miles of 10 golf courses, dozens of fine dining establishments and some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Attractions within its borders include Duck Walk Vineyards, Three Ponds Golf Course, Water Mill Ateliers ART Center and the popular Flying Point Beach. The hamlet is also home to the Villa Maria convent and it has a functioning historic windmill along its main street, making it the only community on the South Fork with both a working watermill and windmill.
This shingled Traditional is hidden away at the end of a long gated and manicured drive in the heart of Water Mill’s farm fields. Every detail has been considered throughout the 8,000 square feet of living space, adorned with the distinct trappings of Craftsman style. Unique stone and marble countertops of the finest quality combine seamlessly with rich woods, fabric wall-coverings, stained glass windows, travertine floors and painted ceiling motifs. The artistry of this home can compete with any of the masterpieces that might adorn its ample walls.
Great for entertaining, the main residence includes three en suite bedrooms, a sunken living room with fireplace, library, glass atrium/sunroom and formal dining room. Three spacious decks overlook miles of farmland vistas. A separate guest cottage features two bedrooms and spacious living room. The master bedroom includes a fireplace, large closets, custom bath and an adjoining private gym. The home’s gourmet kitchen opens to a den and bar with fireplace that’s perfect for gatherings. Outside on the rolling lawn, the party atmosphere continues in a poolside open air pavilion, complete with cabana, fireplace and kitchen. A four-car garage and state-of-the-art wine cellar with barcode inventory and security system add a final note of luxury.
