Mad Gabs started as a home-based business in 1991 and has grown into a successful company in a repurposed mill in Maine. All their products are natural and organic, their packaging is recyclable and reusable and it lists the company’s efforts to ensure minimum impact on the environment. Mad Gab’s Wildly Natural Lip Glosses, with shea butter and organic oils, add just a touch of color, and Lip Shimmers add mica for an understated shimmer. Both come in Plum, Pink and Bronze. Between $5 and $6.
Want to add a little plump to your lips? NYX Pump It Up Lip Plumper is a favorite of mine. When you first apply it, you feel a tingle, but it works immediately and ever so subtly. It also helps keep your lips moist and smooths out some of those unseemly winter weather lines. With nine shades to choose from, each only $6, these plumpers provide maximum bang for your buck.
Bite Beauty has a diverse line of interesting lip colors. They use natural, food-grade ingredients. As they put it, they are “good enough to eat.” Packed with antioxidants, there are several to choose from. I tried three. The Luminous Crème Lipstick comes in 24 creamy, lush shades, and Lip Shine is a translucent gloss infused with jojoba beads. My favorite is the Lip Rouge, which can double as a blush. It comes in a compact and offers a rich, satiny finish. $20 to $24.
If you are on the go and need to “lip up” in public, The Lano Company offers Pure Illumination Natural Hydrating Lip Therapy. Healing jojoba, sweet almond oil, medical-grade lanolin and Vitamin E hydrate your lips, but it’s the packaging that is unique. Twist open the top, remove the wand and an LED light goes on in the handle. There is even a mirror on the side of the tube. You are all set to refresh your lips anywhere, even in the dark! It comes in 13 shades and is about $20.
For a gloss and lip treatment in one, try Koh Gen Do Maifanshi Lip Gloss. With no artificial colors, fragrances, petroleum-based mineral oils or parabens, it heals and soothes damaged lips. Koh Gen Do has a great line of cosmetics and this lip gloss is no exception. It felt great on my lips, lasts and comes in five colors, plus clear. About $25.
Foods rich in Vitamin A (carrots, tomatoes, green leafy veggies) help prevent chapped lips. But if winter weather gets the best of your pucker, applying honey will quickly heal the chaps and retain moisture.
