Haute Habitats Feb 2012

The impressive land that Hewlett Harbor sits upon was first purchased by Joseph Auerbach in 1914 as a summer getaway for him and his family. During the construction of the Auerbach house, remains of an Algonquin Indian chief were discovered. The chief was buried with Indian arrowheads called “sewan.” Auerbach decided to build a golf course in Hewlett Harbor and name it The Seawane Club. In the 1920s, Seawane was sold. However, its new owners were of the opinion that the vast land could fulfill more than the needs of golfers and country clubbers on Long Island. They saw its potential to become the residential oasis it is today. Hewlett Harbor was finally founded as a village in 1925.

The Seawane Club continues to prosper in Hewlett Harbor and the village has become the home of 439 breathtaking dwellings. Located seconds away from the local businesses of Hewlett, the Harbor is a welcome escape from the bustle of southern Nassau County. Serene views of Macy Channel and the historic Willow Pond, public or private docks and private roads devoid of traffic are the most alluring parts of this quiet, elegant village.

This colonial beauty adorned with a brick façade and plenty of room for greenery is well hidden by a private, winding driveway that allows residents to forget the world for a while (or for as long as they choose to stay at home). Built in 1918, the waterfront property is a marriage of old-world standards and new-age luxury. It sits on over two acres of land, has 11 rooms, including a master bedroom equipped with its own loft. The four fireplaces will make any night cozy and warm.

The extensive backyard is ideal for entertaining. With private tennis courts, in-ground pool and entertainment rooms to spare, this house is the perfect place to keep both mind and body active. Close proximity to several golf courses and country clubs make the location ideal for those seeking the trappings of weekend leisure activities.
