Stephen T. Onesti M.D., F.A.C.S., is a board certified neurosurgeon specializing in spine surgery. He served as professor of neurosurgery and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences Center of Brooklyn from 2003 to 2011. Dr. Onesti is Chief, Division of Neurosurgery, South Nassau Communities Hospital.
Dr. Onesti received his undergraduate degree, magna cum laude, from Harvard College and his medical degree, cum laude, from Harvard Medical School. He chose neurosurgery because it combines his love of neuroscience with a surgical practice devoted to helping patients. He opted to subspecialize in spine surgery because he finds it a fascinating and rewarding specialty where he can assist patients to lead better, more productive lives. In addition, he believes that keeping up with the latest technology and advancements in spine surgery is a lifelong learning process, which he finds quite invigorating and enjoyable.
Dr. Onesti is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (F.A.C.S.). His professional memberships include the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the New York State Neurological Society, for which he served as President from 2007-2009. He was selected as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor: New York Metro Area in 2010 and was named 2012 New York Super Doctor by The New York Times Magazine.
