Cigarette smoking and overexposure to the sun are the two most powerful factors in the premature aging of skin. You’re on your own with the smoking, but I can help with that sun issue. Protection from the sun should be a year-round part of your skincare regimen, but it is particularly important when you are exposed for more than 15 minutes. Most of us spend more time in the sun during the summer, but these fine products will help protect skin and slow the aging process.
Hampton Sun is a line of high-end sunscreens with a wide variety of choices. The broad-spectrum UVB and UVA protection spray, Continuous Mist (5oz, about $32) comes in SPF 15, 35 and 55. Water-resistant and infused with vitamins A, E, C and aloe vera, this is one of the more luxurious yet sport-friendly sunscreen options. Hampton Sun’s Super Hydrating Face Cream (1.7oz, about $40) is especially effective in protecting the delicate facial skin with zinc oxide, a physical blocker, while soothing and hydrating with aloe vera, chamomile and a blend of natural and organic ingredients. This cream in a pump bottle is oil and fragrance free, so it’s great for sensitive skin.
If you prefer oil to lotion, Vichy’s Capital Soleil Luxurious Protective Oil comes in a pump spray bottle and covers broad-spectrum rays at SPF 30. Natural white grapeseed oil and vitamin E provide antioxidant protection and the oil feels like silk on the skin. For sensitive skin, the Silkscreen Dry-Finish Lotion at a high broad spectrum SPF 45 is a great choice. It is oil-free, noncomedogenic and allergy tested. True to its name, the lotion absorbs quickly and leaves no residue. About $29 for 5-6oz.
For convenience, nothing beats a packet of sunscreen towelettes. Tocca’s towelettes offer a broad-spectrum sunscreen at SPF 30 with zinc oxide in their classic scent, Stella. Tocca (Italian for “touch”) began as a fashion line and later expanded to perfume and skincare. These towelettes are easy to use, feel great and are small and light so you can easily tuck them in your purse or beach bag. A packet of 10 generously moistened towelettes costs about $24.
Supergoop! focuses on skin-compatible ingredients and natural preservative systems. Their SPF 30 Sunstick comes in a dial-up solid stick form and uses titanium dioxide for maximum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Antioxidant-rich ingredients like tocopherol help protect against free radicals and organic avocado oil provides moisture. They also have convenient, individually wrapped paraben- and fragrance-free Sunscreen Swipes with zinc oxide. Both products are very portable and great for touch ups. The Sunstick is about $14.50 for .27oz and Swipes are about $22 for a box of 30.
