Showtime July 2012

Suffolk

Two exhibitions about Jackson Pollock, what inspired him and the far-reaching influence of his abstract expressionist drip paintings are on view this summer at the revered painter’s former home and studio in Springs. Through July 28, the Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center explores The Persistence of Pollock, a show about the artist’s impact on other artists and his continued presence in contemporary art. Featured work includes pieces by Janine Antoni, Robert Arneson, Lynda Benglis, François Fiedler, Joe Fig, Red Grooms, Ray Johnson, Vik Muniz, Alfonso Ossorio and Norman Rockwell, among others.

From August 2 to October 27, Men of Fire: José Clemente Orozco and Jackson Pollock looks at the 20th century Mexican master and his influence on one of his greatest North American admirers. Showing work by both artists, the exhibition illustrates how deeply Orozco’s murals affected Pollock’s development as an artist.

The fledgling Frank and Gertrude Kaiser Art Gallery at Molloy College in Rockville Centre presents Scenic Routes, a collection of work by five mentor artists and their less established counterparts. The mentor/protégé teams worked together and the results from both the established and emerging artists are on view. Scenic Routes features everything from Comito’s sculptural video installation “The Bridge Moving Over the Landscape,” to de la Huerta’s fabric and drawing collage on pillowcase entitled “Bybam,” Ryer’s rough, oil-stick pieces and digital art by Sparks. Open through July 26, the exhibition is funded by the NYS Council on the Arts and will eventually travel to another venue.
