Collective Benefit

Long Island may be steeped in the canon of art history, from Chase to Pollock to Close, but just how relevant is its place in the contemporary art world? Many local galleries and museums are content to rely on the area’s rich history, and they can be reluctant to show the kind of work seen in nearby Manhattan and Brooklyn. But a growing number of younger, hipper artists are settling in the region and several artist collectives have surfaced as a result. These groups are addressing the question of relevance and creating exhibits that more closely mimic progressive galleries and art fairs in NYC and London. (For those wondering, an art collective is a group of artists working toward shared goals such as exhibiting, critiquing and community outreach.)
