You know me better than you might think. Whether you came of age in the 80s, 90s or just a few years ago, a poster of my predecessors likely adorned your bedroom wall—the perfect complement to that Elle Macpherson, Kathy Ireland or Rebecca Romijn pinup. Be honest, which did you spend more time staring at? Well stop staring and let’s get a bit more intimate; time is running out. After almost 10 years of production, 2013 will be the last for me and my Gallardo siblings. With the highest power output and lightest frame of any other Lambo in the Gallardo family yet, I’m proof we’re not going away quietly.
I’m cut from the same cloth with my recognizable, low-to-the-ground Lamborghini styling. My oversized front-end air intakes help me to stand out from other supercars on the road, while providing a steady stream of air to keep my carbon ceramic brakes nice and cool. Carbon fiber and titanium parts, instead of steel, are what give me that Superleggera moniker that just rolls off the tongue (Italian for “super light”). I weigh in at 2,954 pounds, 154 pounds lighter than your typical Gallardo, and with an additional 38 horsepower for added juice and bragging rights.
But you won’t need to brag; I’ll do that for both of us. Aside from the familiar trapezoidal and triangular styling that attracted you to the poster store in the first place, my 5.2-liter, V10 engine is visible through a polycarbonate window at my rear. So that gaggle of admirers outside Maroni’s in Northport won’t need to ask you to “pop” anything of mine to get a gander. One thing I won’t be popping are any scissor or gull-like doors either, so those curiosity seekers won’t have to worry about getting clotheslined by an automatic door while trying to take a peek inside. To cut weight, I have plenty of carbon fiber inside, too. The center console cover, bucket seats and door panels are rife with the stuff. And my shoes are special, too—custom designed Pirellis. You won’t find a shifter either, as I have paddles within fingers’ reach behind the steering wheel. My low, rumbling engine and wedge-like design will turn just about every head in any bustling downtown area, be it Oceanside, Babylon or Westhampton. As we continue east, that foot traffic will thin out and those pesky streetlights will get farther and farther in between—feel free to have some fun with me. In just over three seconds, you’ll find us hitting 60mph together. Then it will be just me and you, like old times in your bedroom.
