Portrait of a Supercar: 2014 Bentley Flying Spur

My name soars tall as a proud junction of bloodlines; a nod to the 1950s and H.J. Mulliner & Co.’s stately coach-building reputation. But as noble families have merged over generations, I’ve lately been carving out my own, distinct character. From chrome grille to tell-tale dual round headlamps, I know this decisive fascia defines my lineage, though my branch in the tree has split. No longer am I just another noteworthy of the Continental family. 2014 has arrived, and I—the Flying Spur—have returned as Bentley’s newly-crowned countess of character and opulence.

I am not the saloon you first fell in love with (the four-door rendition of Bentley’s aggressive, driver-centric GT coupe), though I’d be terribly stunned if my refinement disappoints you. Hailing from Crewe, England, I am hand-built, polished and primped for the purpose of chauffeuring you and yours in royal fashion. While my cockpit is a cabin any man would be mad about, the backseat is where you truly belong. The traditionally-tanned leathers of my seats are individually sewn and fitted to levels so precise, their craftsman has proudly signed the back of each hide. Rich in earthy aroma, they also blend fluidly into the many mirror-matched veneers of my interior. Treated in a five-layer lacquer process, components typically humdrum have become pieces of automotive jewelry. My front seat-mounted picnic tables have also been crafted in similar fashion and are a proper fitting for tea and light refreshments under dual, 10-inch screens that can play DVDs or other media from SD slot, USB or HDMI ports.

Up front, Alfred will be handsomely treated during his time behind the wheel. Tell him to sport the Bentley 24 H Breitling timepiece you gifted him for the holidays, as it will match my like-branded dash clock quite handsomely. Should you fail to notice the resonance of my 6-liter W12 roaring to life, do not dismay. Much care has been taken to sound-deaden my quarters, not to mention soften my suspension for a floating sensation so thorough, it pays homage to the aeronautical roots of my winged crest. Curious what churns beneath my bonnet? Well love, my available 616 horses and 590 lb-ft of torque will thrust every inch of my queen-sized bodice from naught to 60 in a span of just 4.3 seconds.

As the G-forces pin you to my brand’s signature diamond-quilt stitching, reach down and give my hip a tap, would you treasure? I’ll gently massage away the stresses of your day as we rocket westward. No sense in being alarmed if the sand of Ocean Parkway blurs into glass and steel along our route. My dampers and ride-height are touch-screen adjustable, but dialed to their optimal levels of comfort we’ll practically float over any imperfection or cobble that the LIE throws in front of us. You could get used to this, no darling? It is, of course, this apex of style, luxury and design that has spurred the city’s iconic St. Regis to commission an exclusive Bentley Suite. Should we decide to make this an overnight affair, my designers have combed the accoutrements of its halls to deliver you a grand, stationary extension of my brand’s style.

But if all this amounts to more complacency than you fancy, take the helm yourself dear; you’ll quickly find that I’m perhaps the most drivable car in my class. I may not be quite as nimble as my spritely sister GT coupe, but my lighthouse-levels of visibility and rightly-positioned controls make piloting me rather intuitive. I also fit the confines of a standard parking space with ease.

In fact, I’m fetching in any setting. From Cutchogue to Chelsea, these ample curves and haunches will capture fond gazes. Nestled between the imperial Mulsanne and warhorse Continental, you’d be right to call me “Queen B” of the Bentley trinity; a powerful, yet placid ruler, adored by all who follow us.

Roll down the window shades and let them feast their eyes; for we, my dear are royals. Let them live our fantasy.
