President of the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters Burn Center Fund, Lussa’s group consists of firemen, ambulance crews and their supporters. They began raising money more than 30 years ago to improve the facilities at the Stony Brook Medical Center’s burn unit. Over the course of three decades Lussa, who drives a Hamptons Jitney coach in addition to his work as a firefighter, helped raise more than $1million dollars for the hospital. A vastly upgraded and expanded burn treatment center was opened recently and was named for the Suffolk County Volunteer Firefighters. The 7,200-squarefoot unit contains improved bandaging and debridement areas, larger treatment rooms and six private rooms for recovering patients.
