Oyster farmers on Long Island are getting for the 2014 season. Farmers have their boats in the water and are checking on last year’s oyster crop. According to Natasha Beccaria at the Long Island Farm Bureau the farmers are looking for spring growth, culling out market oysters for sale and assessing any winter damage. Oyster farmers are also getting ready for the next season by fixing up and firing up their floating nursery systems or FLUPSY’s. According to Beccaria the system floats in the water in a dock slip sized space. Barrels hold the seed, which many farmers will soon receive, and an ice eater motor moves the water through the system. The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Marine Program developed the FLUPSY system. Photo Credit: Natasha Beccaria
