Transforming Patchogue’s Main Street into an Entertainment Destination

Alive After Five®, started 13 years ago to revitalize the Main Street of Patchogue has become a widely known and attended series of events for Long Islanders. According to the Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Inc., the biweekly festival was created to transform the “quiet and dead” Main Street into a “vital and popular entertainment destination,” and it has succeeded.

In the upcoming season there will be a variety of new events and activities that includes a new Classical Music stage alongside the rock, jazz and other genres featured. The festival is planned to have multiple themes, kicking off with a carnival style event and masquerade theme.

Later in the season, Alive After Five® will also feature a series of a variety of cultures, with music, food, vendors, and arts.

When you arrive at Main Street, you will be welcomed by over 100 vendors with an array of offerings Alive After Five® gives the public lots to experience for all ages and cultures. Children can have their own area to play and enjoy the evening air along with their families. You can also take the Alive After Five® trolley to featured waterfront restaurants for a fun filled dinner or to whine down after your Main Street experience.

The season’s events will happen on Thursdays: July 17, July 31, August 14, August 28, with a rain date set aside on September 4. Pulse Insider spoke with Alive After Five® committee chair James Skidmore and David Kennedy, executive director, Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Inc about what’s in store for the 13th year.

Tell us a little bit about Alive After Five® and how it started?
Created and sponsored by the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, Inc.,Alive After Five® is a Summer Street Festival celebrating the music, art, food and craft beer that makes Patchogue so unique and special. Main Street is closed to traffic and open to the thousands who come annually on four days throughout the Summer to enjoy over five stages of live entertainment, family activities and unique shopping. Adding to the atmosphere, most of Patchogue’s fine dining establishments offer outdoor seating and bar areas that allow you to be part of the spectacle. Entering our 13th year, Alive After Five® was started at a time when Patchogue’s Main Street was quiet and dead, to be frank and honest. Since, and in a large part thanks to, Alive After Five®, Main Street, Patchogue has transformed into a vital and popular entertainment destination. This year Alive After Five® will take place on Thursdays: July 17, July 31, August 14, August 28 (a rain date is set aside for September 4.)

What is different from previous Alive After Five® seasons?
The 2014 AA5™ introduces more stages with a diverse music selection including a Classical Music stage and a couple of themed events. We will kick off the season with a carnival style AA5 ™ complete with a masquerade and unique vendors. We will close the season with a celebration of ethnic diversity complete with ethnic food vendors, ethnically diverse music and interactive arts. AA5™ will have walking musicians, poets, light shows, dancing and wandering minstrels.
What do you think the future looks like for Alive After Five®, short term and long term?
Short term, Alive After Five® will be planting seeds for a more cultural diverse event including interactive arts, fashion shows and a celebration of community through the arts.
Long-term , The organizers are in hopes that our guests will leave with more than a wide grin and a good time, but will leave with a colorful, enjoyable, and culturally diverse experience that will attract people from across Long Island and become a travelers destination for those who seek a grand experience in our rich and vibrant community.

If someone were to ask you, “Why should I attend Alive After Five ®?” What would you tell him or her?
Well for starters there is the great music. We have culled the best local musicians from the fantastic beats of Pop party bands, Rock & Roll, Classical to the magical melodies of the Ecuadorian Pan flute. We also have over 100 vendors featuring unique offerings to make for an enjoyable shopping experience.
And how about Patchogue itself? Come enjoy our vibrant Main Street, gander at our new shops and eat at our many delicious and diverse restaurants. Come celebrate the music and immerse yourself in the Renaissance which is Patchogue.

Tell us a little bit about what’s in store for Alive After Five® (AA5™) in the next three to six weeks?
There will be some noticeable differences from years past as there will be more artist and entertainers. You will be greeted right from the get go with poets, musicians and magicians. AA5™ will be featuring interactive artists, a huge childrens activities area and a bevy of local artists. Climb aboard our trolley and make your way down to the riverfront restaurants to dance, sing and dine in the salt air of the Great South Bay. No need to guess whats going on , AA5™ will be complete with a Street Team to help you out and direct you to make the most of your time in Patchogue.

Will the new apartments have an effect on the event?
Absolutely! Patchogue welcomes its new addition to Main Street and will be embracing its urban feel and its architectural beauty. Not only do we welcome our new neighbors, but we welcome the future of our lovely, multi-cultural and dynamic community.
