Stroll through the Museums in Garden City

One glance at a map reveals something curious in Garden City, Long Island: a boulevard full museums just waiting for someone wanting to spend a day of exploration strolling down the street and stopping in the three museums.

Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Garden City is home to The Cradle of Aviation, Long Island Children’s Museum and The Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center.

The newest of the museums on Museum Row, the firefighters museum was established in 1995 and takes up close to 10,000 square feet. The Island’s fire department’s contributed to the museum’s interactive exhibits that include fire trucks and tell the story of the history of Nassau County’s firefighters as well provides some lessons on fire safety.

After the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center it’s time for the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The Cradle of Aviation Museum is the oldest of the three museums. It originally opened in 1980 with a handful of aircraft. Today, there are more than 60 aircrafts and two hangers dating back to 1932 that make up the museum, including Charles Lindberg’s Jenny. The hands-on museum lets visitors explore Long Island’s role in aviation.

After learning all about flight and fire it’s time for lunch. The Cradle of Aviation Museum has wraps, pizzas and salads at the Red Planet Café.

After lunch stop by Nunley’s Carousel, right next door to the Cradle of Aviation Museum. Tickets are $2 per rider. The carousel’s 41 horses and one lion have been around since 1912 when the carousel called the Brooklyn waterfront home. Get a brass ring and get a free ride.

Finally, the museum that is impossible to forget, the Long Island Children’s Museum. Each year more than 265,000 people visit the 40,000 square-foot museum that has hands-on art, music and science workshops.
