Take a deep breath and plunge into the frigid waters of Long Island Sound. It’ll be for a good cause. The Long Island Polar Dip set for Sunday, March 1 at Crab Meadow Beach in Huntington is a benefit for Camp Sunshine.
On the shores of Sebago Lake in Casco, Maine, Camp Sunshine is a retreat for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families. The year-round camp is free of charge and offers children and their families a week to relax together. In 2013, 152 families from New York spent a week at Camp Sunshine and Camp Sunshine’s director of special events hopes the Long Island Polar Dip will help raise $20,000 to send additional New Yorkers to the camp.
“This polar dip on Long Island will raise funds for Camp Sunshine and help more families from that area take advantage of our services,” Michael Smith, Camp Sunshine’s director of special events said. “The reality of this event is that the discomfort our plungers feel for just a moment will never compare to what our families go through during the course of their child’s illness. It’s for the families and children that we plunge – we call it Freezin’ for a Reason.”
Raising $20,000 will enable 10 New York families to attend Camp Sunshine. The goal is for each plunger to raise a minimum of $100 in pledges. Plungers can also create plunge teams of four or more people.
Those too chicken to plunge into the cold waves of Long Island Sound can participate in the Chicken Dip instead. Chicken dippers only need to get their feet wet but still have a goal of raising a minimum of $100.
Go on, get freezin’ for a reason
