Fast Friday: Celebrate Shark Week by Watching Jaws on a Lake

Pulse Fast Friday is a feature of commentary from the week that was. We scour the digital world to show you the things that caught our eyes recently on the web; trending topics you may have missed, the hottest gadgets, new apps and more. What’s recently caught your eye? Leave your suggestions in the comments below.

The White House Gets Social

You can now take a selfie in the White House, just leave the selfie stick at home. First Lady Michelle Obama appropriately took to Instagram to make the announcement, tearing up a sign that said, “No Photos or Social Media Allowed.” The move makes sense. Thanks to that fifth-limb known as the iPhone, we’re all photographers these days. There are a few rules, of course: Lenses must be no more than three inches, and you can’t interfere with anyone’s good time on the tour. Flash photography and live streaming are no-nos as are video cameras, cameras with detachable lenses, tablets, tripods, monopods and camera sticks. Enough about the rules. Get your crew together for a road trip and try to top Ellen. For the Love of Lloyd

Carli Lloyd showed the world what it means to #PlayLikeAGirl Sunday. The forward and team captain netted the fastest hat trick in World Cup history — men or women — to lead the United States to a 5-2 win over Japan and its first Women’s World Cup trophy since 1999, the year of Brandi Chastain’s now iconic celebration. Lloyd scored three goals in 16 minutes as part of a four-goal flurry that put the U.S. ahead 4-0. She saved her best for last, putting in a goal from 50 yards out. The Jersey girl is only the second player to strike three times in a World Cup title match and first since England’s Geoff Hurst against Germany in 1966. It’s safe to say she was an easy choice for the Golden Ball.

Don’t Get Out of the Water

jaws-1

We’re not sure about this one, even if it is Shark Week. The Alamo Drafthouse movie theater in Texas (you know, the one with the strict no-texting policy) is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Jaws by hosting an outdoor screening on a man-made lake on Texas Ski Ranch Saturday, July 11. Isn’t that the opposite of what you’re supposed to do? If you’re not feeling the whole you’re-going-to-need-a-bigger-float vibe, there will be ample lounge chairs for people to sit on. You can buy food and drink on-site, including beer, which you might need during certain scenes.

Summer is in full swing and that means we’re all looking for  utterly refreshing cocktails to mix up. Our top pin of the week was a recipe for for a gin and honey concoction. Get a buzz without the sting.
