Wick to Flame

Brittany Torres is busy. The young woman who calls East Quogue home is in between making deliveries for her brand new business when I catch up with her and, despite the hectic day, she’s clearly happy.

“I finally found something I could form into a business that I knew that I would love,” Torres said.

That business is Hamptons Handpoured; a company producing locally made candles throughout the East End with hopes to slowly increase the following to the western side of the Island.

The deliveries Torres is making are to both local shops and direct customers and include the six different types of candles Torres produces. Each of the candles is clean burning with a cotton wick, 100 percent soy and contains scents that are meant to invoke the sprit of different East End towns.

“The Southampton Candle is my favorite: cotton, gardenia and white tea, which is no surprise because it is where I grew up,” Torres said.

Growing up in the pre-Pinterest age, Torres was always a bit of a DIY maven. She’d made candles in the past, but the idea to create scented candles from fragrance oil derived from essential oils came to her as a result of health issues. She’d gotten into aromatherapy; lighting candles at the same time and thought it would be easy to combine the two into candles.

It was a bit harder than she thought as she couldn’t use the essential oils in aromatherapy directly in the candles and turned to fragrance oils instead.

Those candles are now available in more than 20 Hampton shops including GOOD Westhampton, Breezin Up and Coastal Home and with a new Etsy shop, Torres has turned her DIY love into a career.
