7 Cocktails for Netflix Binge-Watching

As we’ve grown up a bit, we’ve learned a thing or two about binging. For example, binge-drinking induces three-day head-splitting headaches once you hit 25. Binge-watching on Netflix, on the other hand, is a fantastic way to spend a Friday night. Your college-aged niece may think you’re the most boring person alive, but she’ll learn what she’s missing as soon as she gets her first soul-crushing post-graduation job. In the meantime, there’s no reason you can’t add a little edge to your Netflix obsession. In some cases, like when you’re having a nostalgia night, it’s necessary (man, those Tanners sure did hug a lot on Full House). To help you get a little buzz during your binge, I scoured the Drinkology archives to find the perfect cocktails for your favorite movies and shows.

Watch with: The Aphrodite

Sherry Dempsey, Martin’s fling and a bartender in her own right, kept Frasier fans laughing with her fun-loving, brash and crash ’tude. Raise a glass of the sherry cocktail, The Aphrodite, to the character that earned actress Marsha Mason an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress – Comedy Series. Make it.

House of Cards
Watch with: The Jack Sparrow

If Frank Underwood were a drink, he’d be the Jack Sparrow. Full of character just like Underwood, the rum-soaked beverage is made with underappreciated Chartreuse. Underwood can certainly relate to feeling ignored. He’s been on a tear ever since he was snubbed for that Secretary of State appointment. Make it.

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Watch with: Rosé, Rosé

Tina Fey hit another home run when she teamed up with co-creator Robert Carlock to introduce us to the naive but resilient Kimmy Schmidt, who escaped a doomsday cult and moved to New York to start a new life. Get the girls together for a night of Kimmy, Titus, Jacquelin and a cocktail made with the wine that had the Hamptons buzzing all summer long. Somehow we can’t picture Kimmy drinking, but the bubbly cocktail bursting with strawberry and peach flavors would be right up her ally if she did. Make it.

The Great Gatsby (1974)
Watch with: The Bee’s Knees

Drinking gin on the rocks while you’re at home in your loungewear may put you in some kind of sketchy category. Sip the refreshing Bee’s Knees, which mixes gin with lemon juice and honey, instead as you watch Mia Farrow and Robert Redford star as Daisy and Gatsby. Fun fact: honey was used to cover up bathtub gin during Prohibition. Make it.

All Things Holidays
Watch with: Glögg

The holidays are right around the corner. We’re all about the classics: classic movies, classic TV holiday episodes and classic drinks like egg nog, cider and hot chocolate, but it’s fun to mix it up. As you get re-acquainted with an old favorite Yuletide flick, try a mason jar full of Glögg. A regular cup works, too. Make it.

New Girl
Watch with: The Resting Point

Admit it: sometimes you wish you could go to happy hour with the quirky, upbeat Jess, played by the adorable Zooey Deschanel. Watch her come into her own in an LA apartment full of dudes with a glass of The Resting Point. Sweet-and-spicy with a little more than a shot of tequila, it’s a great alternative to your happy hour go-to, the margarita. Make it.

Watch with: Manhattan

Like Friends, a Manhattan is a classic sip, one that’s stood the test of time. Coincidently, the city served as the perfect backdrop for the show during its epic 10-year run. Make it.

If you’re looking for something to watch on Netflix, check back Monday to see what’s coming to the streaming service in December.
