Did You Know These Films Were Shot on Long Island?

films shot on long island

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey star in Sisters, which was partly shot on Long Island.

In the upcoming comedy Sisters, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey star as two sisters who throw a final house party before their parents sell the family home. In theaters on Dec. 18, the movie was shot in various Long Island towns (Dix Hills and Huntington among them). Maybe a bit surprisingly, the towns that we call home have been utilized as the perfect scenic backgrounds in plenty other films (both high caliber and others). Below, we round up some of the most exciting ones:

American Gangster (2007)
Shot in Westbury

Depicting Manhattan in the 1970s, American Gangster stars Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe as, respectively, the era’s most successful gangster and the detective committed to his downfall. Although the movie was shot all around New York and Thailand, the Old Westbury Gardens served as the backdrop for a few scenes.

Annie Hall (1977)
Shot on the South Fork and in the Hamptons

Wrote, starred in and directed by Woody Allen, Annie Hall won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Diane Keaton) and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards. Arguably one of the most memorable scenes in the production, the one in which Alvy (Allen) and Annie (Keaton) attempt to cook a lobster while at the beach house, was one of many shot in the Hamptons.

Blue Jasmine (2013)
Shot in Quogue

Although Cate Blanchett’s character moves from New York to San Francisco at the outset of the film, viewers are shown flashbacks of the character’s former life as the wife of dubious businessman Hal (Alec Baldwin) in Quogue, Suffolk County.

Citizen Kane (1941)
Shot in Huntington

Following the death of newspaper tycoon Charles Foster Kane (Orson Welles), a reporter (Joseph Cotten) initiates an investigation into the meaning of the deceased’s last word: “rosebud.” Told mostly through flashbacks, Oheka Castle served as the location for Xanadu, Kane’s vast estate.

Cruel Intentions (1999)
Shot in Old Westbury

In this dramatically erotic tale, Old Westbury Gardens functions as the country estate of Mrs. Rosemont (Louise Fletcher), aunt to Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Philippe), who helps step-sister Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) enact a revenge plot against her ex-lover.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Shot in Montauk and throughout Long Island

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet star as a couple that undergoes a procedure to erase all memories following a breakup. As the plot unfolds on Long Island, many local landmarks make an appearance (including the Rockville Centre and Montauk train stations, the Montauk House and others).

Goodfellas (1990)
Shot on Atlantic Beach

Shot entirely throughout New York, Goodfellas stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci as friends who work their way through the mob world. The scene in which the characters are on vacation was shot on Atlantic Beach.

Hitch (2005)
Shot in Old Westbury

Not to spoil the ending, but the romantic comedy starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes ends in a grand wedding at the Old Westbury Gardens.

Love Story (1970)
Shot in Old Westbury

Yet another movie filmed at the Old Westbury Gardens, Love Story narrated the relationship between Ryan O’Neal’s and Ali McGraw’s characters. The location’s driveway is used as O’Neal’s character’s home entrance and the home itself is depicted as the Phipps Estate, also located on the grounds of the Old Westbury Gardens.

Noah (2014)
Shot in Oyster Bay

Director Darren Aronofsky chose Oyster Bay as the perfect setting to shoot the exterior ark scenes for his biblical biopic, Noah, starring Russell Crowe.

Pollock (2000)
Shot in East Hampton

An indie hit that won recognition during the Academy Awards, Pollock chronicles the life of the eponymous painter, played by Ed Harris, and his eventual path to self-destruction. In 1945, Pollock and his wife Lee Krasner, an American painter, moved to the Springs area of East Hampton, where the filmmakers were able to eventually shoot (the Pollock-Krasner House makes appearances as well).

Splendor in the Grass (1961)
Shot in Brookhaven

Focusing on a forbidden love story set in Kansas, Splendor in the Grass’ filmmakers turned Long Island into Kansas when filming on 200 acres within the Brookhaven hamlet (with a particular focus on Beaver Dam, given its resemblance to Kansas). Following the shoot, Natalie Wood, who starred as half of the forbidden couple, was given a symbolic key to the town by Brookhaven supervisor August Strout Jr.

The Avengers (2012)
Shot in Bethpage

At the time only the second movie filmed at Grumman Studios in Bethpage (the first one being the Angelina Jolie action film Salt), The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hiddleston as some of the most recognized comic book superheroes.

The Godfather (1972)
Shot throughout Long Island

The first installment of the series, The Godfather took home the Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Adapted Screenplay during the Academy Awards. Plenty of the movie’s scenes were shot throughout Long Island, including the one in which Jack Waltz discovers a decapitated horse head in his bed. Mitchell Field, now part of Nassau Community College, and Garden City are amongst the other many filmed locations.

The Great Gatsby (2013)
Shot on the North Shore

An adaptation of the renowned novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the movie shot throughout the North Shore, depicting the exact locations that are narrated and written about in the book. The film’s visual beauty was awarded with both a Production Design and Costume Design Academy Award.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
Shot throughout Long Island

The Wolf of Wall Street, directed by Martin Scorsese, is based on the eponymous autobiographical novel by Jordan Belfort, telling the tale of his rise as a stockbroker at Stratton Oakmont and his inevitable downfall, led by the corporation’s corruption and fraud counts. Given the protagonist’s residence on Long Island, it is no surprise that many local spaces were included in the final cut. The beach house where Belfort meets his future wife, Naomi Lapaglia (Margot Robbie) is found in Sands Boy. Once married, the couple moved into the house at 5 Pin Oak Court in Old Brookville, but, in the movie, the filmmakers chose the mansion at 39 Chestnut Hill Drive in Oyster Bay as the perfect setting. The couple’s beach wedding was filmed at the Crescent Beach Club in Wayville (although, in reality, the couple got married in Anguilla). Other shots include the Mill Hill Farm, a private horse farm in Wainscott, and others.

Young Adult (2011)
Shot in Garden City and Massapequa Park

Although the movie, which sees ghost writer Mavis Gary (Charlize Theron) return to her native small-town following her divorce looking to rekindle with her ex-boyfriend, is set in Minnesota, the filmmakers chose Massapequa Park as an ideal location (with a special scene shot at local Woody’s Village Saloon).
