Say Amore to Italian Wines in NYC

Wine lovers and sweeties of wine lovers will want to spend the evening of Feb. 23 in New York City. That’s the day Great Wines of Italy NYC returns. Basically it’s a night of good wines, cool vibes, music and fun guided by wine critic James Suckling.

The tasting evening is a chance to mingle with more than 100 Italian wine vintners and try some of the country’s most interesting vintages, like those by Antinori Banfi and Frescobaldi. Expect to discover boutique and up-and-coming wineries.

“It will be a night to remember,” said Zachys Wine & Liquor vice president Andrew McMurray. Zachys and JamesSuckling.com are the hosts behind the evening.

The wines you’re going to want to remember are the Brunello di Montalcino Riservas 2010. Described as magical, some 2010 vintages hit stores in late 2015 but the ones at Great Wines of Italy NYC are making their American debut and a couple even have a perfect 100 score from Suckling. If that was all Italian to you, here’s what you need to know: a Brunello di Montalcino is red wine made from 100 percent Sangiovese grapes, it must age at least two years in oak but five total. It’s the older brother to the “The Vintage of a Lifetime Brunello di Montalcino 2010,” which already caused a buying frenzy.

“I had the opportunity to join James in Italy to taste a variety of 2010 Brunello Riservas in September and I was blown away by the quality of these wines,” McMurray said.

After Great Wines of Italy NYC all of the wines will be available for Zachys. If one of those wines you purchase is a Brunello di Montalcino it will get better with age. Store it properly for 10 years. With more than 295 wines at Great Wines of Italy the choices are as impressive as they are impossible to pick a favorite. Suckling handpicked each of the wines, all rated 90 points or more, which on the Suckling rating system means outstanding. Ninety-five or more (expect more than 35 at Great Wines of Italy NYC to have that rating) are a “must buy.”

“Great Wines of Italy is one of my favorite yearly events we co-host with James Suckling,” McMurray said. “The producers participating in this incredible event represent the who’s who of Italian winemaking.”

McMurray’s other must tries are the Fuligni Riserva 2010 (99JS) and Madonna del Piano Riserva Valdicava 2010 (100JS).
