Irish whiskey is a finicky cocktail companion. It’s not as robust as bourbon or as bold and spicy as rye. But its smooth nature finds a home in some classic setups. This being the month that everyone is a little more Irish, give Erin’s brown liquor its due with this shamrocked twist on a Manhattan.
Sweet vermouth makes this drink a mellow sipper. We beg forgiveness from Irish Loyalists for letting anything orange pass their lips, but it’s one of the few flavors that pairs exceptionally well with the whiskey (and it’s just in the bitters and garnish). Put on your best brogue and toast the Emerald Isle with a drink worthy of its namesake. Slainte!
Ingredients
2oz Irish whiskey
1oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes orange bitters
Orange peel for garnish
Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled glass. Adorn with an orange peel. Raise glass and recite a somber Irish blessing.
