The regular network television season ends mid-May, but don’t worry, Netflix is making sure there’s no time for anyone to notice a hole where TGIT used to be. The release schedule this month is jam-packed with returning favorites and big names (we’re talking Brad Pitt big…seriously). Check out our preview before you decide what to binge first.
Returning Dramas: Sense8 & House of Cards
There are so many original favorites returning this month, we had to split them up by genre starting with dramas. First, the favorite sci-fi drama Sense8 returns for its second full season. The 2016 Christmas special hyped fans again after a long hiatus. We’re ready for the sensates to return. Drops May 5.
Then there’s the show that started it all. House of Cards, everyone’s favorite political drama is back at the end of the month, with a new showrunner. We have no idea what to expect, but we’re guessing some thrilling drama won’t be left out. Drops May 30.
Laugh Out Loud Originals: Master of None & Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
It’s no secret Netflix loves New York. A few of its popular series are set there. Both comedies premiering new seasons this month feature the lead characters trying to make it in the Big Apple. The dramedy Master of None returns after a lengthy hiatus. Keep the laughs going as Aziz Ansari plays Dev, an aspiring actor trying to catch a break. Drops May 12.
Of course, Kimmy Schmidt is still out of the bunker and causing chaos on the city streets with Titus. Season 3 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt returns a week later. Drops May 19.
Docu-Binge: The Mars Generation, Get Me Roger Stone & Laerte-se
It may not be an actual term, but even so, Netflix is giving non-fiction lovers plenty to docu-binge in May. They acquired The Mars Generation at the Sundance Film Festival. It features space-obsessed kids experiencing what it would be like to leave Earth. The kids and experts like Bill Nye consider what the Mars Mission will mean to history. Drops May 5.
Get Me Roger Stone is an in-depth look into the life of Washington’s resident bad boy and Republican political consultant. Love him or hate him, he doesn’t care either way. Drops May 12.
Laerte-se is a film about well-known cartoonist Laerte Coutinho who recently transitioned into a woman. Drops May 19.
Blast to The Past: Anne
Anne is a television adaptation of the popular novel Anne of Green Gables. An orphan with a difficult life escapes through stories. The series aired on CBC in Canada but is being marketed as a Netflix original program in other countries. Fans of the book are in for a treat! Drops May 12.
Movie Night (Feat. Brad Pitt): War Machine
A war parody is premiering bringing some controversy to Netflix. War Machine, produced by the team behind The Big Short, is set during the later stages of the war in Afghanistan. Brad Pitt plays a four-star general charged with gaining the trust of locals in order to help them re-build their lives. Drops May 26.
