When it comes to menswear, size matters. Exaggerated shoulders and 80s-inspired cuts are a standout trend this season. Some designers went all out fantasy in their proportions. Balenciaga and Gosha Rubchinskiy unabashedly embraced the style. Jackets with enormous, structured shoulders designed by both fashion houses looked as if they’d been lifted directly from Herman Munster’s closet. The daring trend isn’t all that monstrous if paired with classic, beautifully tailored slacks or timeless blue jeans.
Lanvin and Vivienne Westwood took a much more wearable approach. The designers acknowledged the trend, but with subtlety that contoured to the body’s natural shape—the enormous shoulder minimizes the waist giving a long and lean look.
The best bet is to keep it simple and balanced with a classic sweater or a turtleneck in neutral colors. Avoid appearing cartoonish by keeping the sizes in proportion with the accent on the shoulder.
