Escape the heat and veg out on the couch with some Netflix this August. The network is offering up plenty of comedies, some Marvel favorites and a scandalous sports documentary that will intrigue even those who don’t know the rules of any game.
Noteworthy Originals: Marvel’s The Defenders & Atypical
Marvel’s The Defenders is easily the most anticipated Netflix release this month. Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Danny Rand step out of their individual shows and fight evil on Manhattan’s streets together. Drops August 18.
Atypical follows an 18-year-old with autism named Sam as he navigates coming of age and dealing with an overprotective mom. The show stars Keir Gilchrist and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Drops August 11.
Laugh Out Loud: Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, Naked, Disjointed, Comedy Rodeo & Immigrant
Our favorite campers are back, likely for one last time, in Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later. The franchise has covered the first and last days of camp….so why not the 10-year reunion? Stars including Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Christopher Meloni, Molly Shannon, David Hyde Pierce and Janeane Garofalo were game, and so are we! Drops August 4.
While not exactly a reboot, the Netflix original comedy this month revisits the same idea as Groundhog Day (1993.) In Naked, Rob Anderson played by Marlon Wayans keeps waking up in an elevator, well, naked. The nervous groom relives the same moments before his wedding day in order to get things right. Drops August 11.
Disjointed is a sitcom starring Kathy Bates as the head of a controversial family-run marijuana dispensary. The stoner comedy comes from creator Chuck Lorre, the man behind the hits The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. Drops August 25.
Some famous faces are also helping you laugh in August. Iranian-American comedian Maz Jobrani is bringing some political humor with his hourlong special Immigrant. Country star Brad Paisley is also making a debut with Brad Paisley’s Comedy Rodeo, a special featuring five stand-ups, David Hasselhoff and Reba McEntire. Drop August 1 and 15 respectively.
Chills & Thrills: Voltron: Legendary Defender & Death Note
Death Note is an original film based on the Manga series. A teenager finds a notebook that allows him to kill people simply by writing their names inside. He targets criminals in this controversial title. Drops August 25.
The popular animated action series Voltron: Legendary Defenders premieres its third season in the beginning of the month. Drops August 4.
Scandalous: Icarus (Documentary)
Forget politics. Icarus is a Sundance documentary acquired by Netflix that exposes one of the biggest sports scandals of all time: the Russian Olympic dope scandal. From the first few seconds of the trailer it’s obvious the filmmakers were not messing around. Sports fan or not, the high stakes drama of it all has the power to draw anyone in. Drops August 4.
