Bango Bowls Opening in Huntington

Summer may be ending, but fresh and fruity can still be on the menu for Walt Whitman Mall shoppers. Bango Bowls will open there this week.

It’s the second location for Bango Bowls, which began in Massapequa Park in 2015. The fast-casual eatery serves up bowls containing acai, a purple berry that grows on palm trees in Central and South America. Pronounced ah sigh EEE, the superfood contains omega three fatty acids, dietary fiber and phytosterols, which provide support for the immune system.

Co-owner James Bonanno, who also owns the Tap Room in Massapequa Park and Patchogue, first discovered acai during vacations in Florida and California.

“It was a product that tasted amazing and was healthy for you,” Bonanno said. “We saw an opportunity there.”

Bonanno was right. People have flocked to the Massapequa location for the bowls, which also contain granola, banana, strawberry, honey, blueberry, coconut and soy milk. Oatmeal bowls, like the Fire Island Sunrise (pineapple, mango and coconut shavings) and The Shinnecock (chocolate chips, mini marshmallows and crushed graham cracker), are also on the menu. Toppings, including honey, granola and peanut butter, are available for each.

Bonanno noticed people loved mixing and matching toppings and decided to take the customization a step further at Walt Whitman. The new location will have a Chipotle-style line and allow people to choose different types of granola and bases. Bonanno expects the chocolate-coffee flavored granola will be a favorite.

“At our other location [people tend to eat] Nutella and chocolate chips…more for dessert later in the day, so I think introducing the chocolate-coffee flavor will be a hit.”

New locations in Bay Shore and East Setauket are scheduled to open this fall and will use the same Chipotle-style line.
