The Loading Dock: Patchogue’s Biggest Secret

The secret’s out: Patchogue has a new event venue for comedy and music shows. Called The Loading Dock, the location and space were kept a mystery in order to build some hype until the placed opened in March.

“The concept of a speakeasy is you don’t outright tell everyone where it is and what it is,” said Gary Hygom, executive director of Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts, which owns and operates The Loading Dock. “It’s up to them to find it and discover what’s inside. But once it’s out there, you leave it to word of mouth to carry the momentum of the space.”

Upon entering the intimate space (it holds 150 people), visitors can expect a “backstage experience” with an industrial feel. Accents are highlighted with LED lighting while a mini stage sits on the main stage where artists perform surrounded by tables and chairs. There is also a large bar at the back of the venue.

The team hired two Patchogue Art Council artists to develop artwork unique to The Loading Dock. The artists took The Loading Dock’s logo—an eye designed by graphic artist Dexter Dible—and worked them into their own creations like chalking and stamped Post-its. The Loading Dock’s team then displayed finished products in Patchogue.

“We only created a Facebook page as main hub for information about the venue,” Hygom said. “The tag line was, ‘Come get weird with us.’ Those interested in attending opening night [March 15] of The Loading Dock were directed to request access to the venue.”

The Loading Dock granted access to 150 people and provided them with special instructions along with the GPS coordinates. Another 80 people made the cut for the waiting list. Future events will follow suit.

While the venue doesn’t serve food, The Loading Dock is in the process of securing a liquor license to offer some adult beverages. But guests can sip on craft beer and wine. Plus, the Loading Dock also plans to offer frosé (frozen rosé wine).

The upcoming comedy dates are April 12 and May 3. The first music date is Thursday, April 19 with Gina Cutillo. Future music dates and acts will be announced soon.
