Christopher Verga is a local historian and American history lecturer at Suffolk County Community College. Christopher utilized images from local historical societies, private collections, and The African American Museum of Nassau County to author Civil Rights on Long Island, an Images of America Series book. Did you know that at one time Long Island had the largest slave population in the North? And according to Verga, the “biggest donors” to the KKK were “real estate companies.” “There were people challenging boundaries…breaking racial barriers” on Long Island, which in turn became a battleground in the nation’s civil rights struggle.
