On Saturday July 30th, Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) will hold their inaugural Walk of Hope to Defeat Depression. Starting at 9am at the Southampton Cultural Center, HDRF’s Founder, Audrey Gruss will lead participants on a beautiful three-mile walk around Lake Agawam in Southampton Village.
Following the walk, HDRF will hold their first ever Shop for Hope event. Participating stores, including [shop names] around Main Street and Jobs Lane will open their doors to shoppers and donate a percentage of all sales made between 11am and 2pm to HDRF. Every dollar raised goes directly to research.
Southampton resident Audrey Gruss founded the Walk of Hope and its partner event Shop for Hope to raise awareness of the debilitating effects of depression. Depression affects one in ten adults each year and according to the World Health Organization, depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide.
HDRF was founded in April 2006 in memory of Audrey’s mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. The causes of depression are still unknown and 50% of people do not respond to existing medications, but HDRF is working to change that. The mission of HDRF is to accelerate advanced brain research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression, as well as raise awareness of depression as a medical illness, educate the public and erase the stigma of depression.
Over the past ten years, HDRF has grown to become the leading nonprofit organization focused solely on depression research. Despite its prevalence, depression is still misunderstood, underfunded and under-researched. To date, HDRF has provided more than $20 million through over 125 grants for accelerated breakthrough depression research that promises to lead to new and better medications and treatments.
