Island Hop in Louis Vuitton’s Men’s Pop-up

Aloha! On the slick turquoise floors of Louis Vuitton’s latest endeavor is a men’s pop-up that will stir your wanderlust gene. I visited the shop on Madison Avenue and was greeted by two cheerful attendants uniformed in vibrant Hawaiian shirts who were more than happy to talk about the items for sale. The space was formally the DKNY shop, which is transformed into an island outpost with men’s clothing, shoes and leather goods designed exclusively for this mini vacation experience. Island hopping is the inspiration for the temporary shop with a painted jeep as a centerpiece of the space—sorry it’s not for sale but selfies are allowed.

Travel is always a strong jumping-off point for Kim Jones, the men’s creative director. “Someone gave me a book recently, Pocket Atlas of Remote Islands: Fifty Islands I Have Not Visited and Never Will. I realized I had been to all those places,” he said. Jones, an avid traveler, gives Easter Island, New Zealand and Hawaii inspirational credit for his designs in this grouping of lifestyle clothing and leather goods. The almost neon bright tropical graphics are infused on sweaters, shirts and jackets interspersed with plain but no less cool dude basics like a nylon anorak. A standout piece is a black shearling baseball jacket—not tropical at all but works seamlessly with the rest of the pieces. Go figure! Created exclusively for the shop are a reimagined monogram keepall, sneakers and other leather pieces now split in half with a Pacific blue color on one side. There are also painted surfboards for sale, several of which have already been sold for over $7,000 a pop.

In the spirit of keeping fans wanting for more, this pop-up has a short life and will only be open through mid-March. It’s worth a trip on the LIRR to check out the fun vacay vibe and buy something that will set you apart from the fray.

Louis Vuitton men’s shop is at 655 Madison Avenue in Manhattan.
