When visiting the East End wine trails, it’s almost impossible to overlook Wölffer Estate Vineyard. The rolling landscape and lush vines captivate imaginations while the world-famous “Summer in a Bottle” rosé never fails to leave taste buds singing. As summer outings start to kick in, winemaker and partner Roman Roth shared the five best wines to sip this season.
No. 139 Dry White Cider
Who said ciders were just for fall? This heavenly drink combines a variety of apples and a small quantity of Asian pear perfect for warm weather sipping. “The combination of different flavors and textures provides depth and interest to this elegant, vibrant, balanced and fruit-driven cider.” Pale yellow in color, it has fine apple aromas, backed by lovely creamy yeast notes.
Pair with: the vineyard’s fruit and nuts nosh board.
Wölffer Estate Grandioso Rosé 2017
As the name hints, the Grandioso is sophisticated and impressive in structure. “Grandioso, our reserve-level White Horse Rosé, differs from our gold-label rosé not only in the blend, but especially in how it is vinified.” It’s made in a more traditional method, Roth explained, with all of the juice fermenting in old “neutral” barrels with less contact for five months. The result is a creamy, nutty yeast character unique to the rosé category. “The freshness, richness and elegance are in perfect harmony.”
Pair with: the vineyard’s drunken goat cheese and prosciutto.
Wölffer Estate Cabernet Franc 2015
When taken good care of in the vineyard, the Cabernet Franc “can ripen well and produce a wine with wonderful structure, amazing fruit and playfulness,” Roth said. And this blend doesn’t fall short, boasting amazing aromas and dark fruit notes of cassis, licorice, fine sandalwood and dark chocolate.
Pair with: the vineyard’s olli chorizo from Virginia and the manchego, or warm flatbread with manchego, sliced apple and balsamic reduction drizzle.
Wölffer Estate Noblesse Oblige Extra Brut Sparkling Wine Methode Traditional 2014
Shiny salmon and orange in color, this sparkling wine is as savory as it is beautiful. “The mousse is absolutely stunning, a firework of tiny bubbles.” The aroma is also elegant yet rich with hints of fresh strawberries, peaches, rose petals, creamy yeast and a fine toast.
Pair with: the vineyard’s lamb chopper or moses sleeper soft cheeses.
Wölffer Estate Trebbiano 2017
Summer whites can become so mundane. Mix things up with the Trebbiano, the ubiquitous Italian grape that is extremely well-suited for growing conditions on the East End. “Our Trebbiano is a delightful, food-friendly white that’s light yet refreshing with amazing aromas of honeysuckle, fresh peaches and hints of lime.”
Pair with: the vineyard’s Mediterranean small plate or the warm baguette with olive tapenade.
